2015 Laura Edwards TLA Conference Stipend Winner

LAURA EDWARDS (1943-1996) epitomized professional involvement, dedication and commitment to the library profession. Laura's sparkling personality and boundless energy level was a source of joy to students, teachers, librarians, and vendors of library resources. Within her service to the Texas Library Association Laura served as Chairperson of both the Texas Association of School Librarians, and Children's Round Table. Committee positions included: TASL Student Library Assistant and Texas Bluebonnet Award. Laura was nominated to serve as President of TLA in 1993. Within the American Library Association Laura served on the School Library Media Program Development, National School Library Media Month and the ALSC Newbery Award Committees. Because she believed in and actively supported professional involvement the Texas Library Association the Laura Edwards Memorial Stipend was established to honor her memory.

Zulema Garza, RD Martinez Elementary Librarian

 

Ms. Garza has been an educator for 12 years.  She was a third grade teacher for nine years in Sharyland ISD prior to accepting the position of librarian at RD Martinez Elementary.   Zulema has a passion for children's literature, and she hopes to provide the students with new reading adventures and instill the love of literature.  She's a member of the Sharyland community.  Her son Hugo is a sophomore at Sharyland Pioneer High School. He plays the trumpet in the Dynamic DiamondBack Band.  Her activities include reading, band boosters and spending time with her family.  She loves to travel and take pictures.
