S. Zulema Bewley, Harry B. Shimotsu Elementary Librarian, received notification last week from Ling Hwey Jeng, Ph.D. 2017-2018 President of the Texas Library Association that she had been selected among a field of applicants to serve a three year term on the Texas Bluebonnet Selection Committee.  Her term will begin immediately following the Texas Library Association Conference in April of this year.

The Texas Bluebonnet Award (TBA) reading program was established in 1979 to encourage Texas children to read more books, explore a variety of current books, develop powers of discrimination, and identify their favorite books. The Texas Bluebonnet Awards Selection Committee is responsible for selection of the books on each year's master list. Suggestions are solicited from librarians, teachers, parents, students and other interested persons. A new list of twenty books is released each year at the Texas Book Festival in October.  The Texas Bluebonnet Award Committee is comprised of 20 members.  Ten serve on the selection committee; ten serve on the program committee.

Last year Shimotsu Principal Anthony Limon proposed that Mrs. Bewley apply for the selection committee.  A few months later, Nicole Cruz, SISD Lead Librarian also encouraged her to apply.  She discussed the application and commitment with her husband who is also an educator, and he immediately supported her.   Anthony Limon said, “I encouraged Mrs. Bewley to apply for the Bluebonnet committee because she embodies what it means to work at Sharyland ISD.  She is dedicated, intelligent and loves the children.  I am so proud that she is representing our district at the state level.” “Her vast knowledge of literature, passion to create future readers, and dedication to the profession definitely makes her an excellent new addition to this state committee,” stated Nicole H. Cruz, SISD Lead Librarian.

When asked about this new challenge Zulema Bewley said, “I am honored to be selected to participate in this prestigious committee.  I have a passion for children’s literature and am delighted to be part of the process that encourages children to read diverse, quality books.”
