Bilingual/ESL Program Mission Statement

The mission of the Bilingual/ESL Program of Sharyland ISD is to provide multiple opportunities for all students to become competent in listening, speaking, reading, writing and comprehending the English language through the development of literacy and academic skills in order for them to master the state curriculum, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and participate equitably in school.

 
Junior High School Program (7th-8th)
 Content-Based ESL Model
Sharyland ISD implements the state mandated English as a Second Language Program through the Content-Based ESL Model as per TEC §89.1210.  This model provides supplementary instruction for all content areas by integrating ESL instruction with subject matter instruction that focuses on learning a second language using English as a medium to learn math, science, social studies, and other academic subjects.  Teachers are ESL Certified and/or have received professional development in Sheltered Instruction.
 
Newcomer Program
The purpose of the Newcomer Program at Sharyland ISD is to help students and their families understand the American educational system and to provide instructional support to ensure that immigrant students access the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and learn both academic and functional English.
 Components
Newcomer English Language Arts  English Language Arts course designed to address the linguistic needs of recent immigrants in their first or second year in U.S schools.  This course, taught by ESL-certified teachers, follows the state curriculum for the appropriate grade level, ELA TEKS/ELPS. Teachers utilize diverse instructional materials to teach the subject matter at the different language levels of the students.  
Sheltered Instruction Content Area Courses  Sheltered Instruction is a framework for planning and delivering instruction in content areas such as science, history, and mathematics to limited-English proficient students. The purpose of using a sheltered instruction approach is to help teachers integrate academic language development into their lessons, allowing students to learn and practice English as it is used in the context of school, including the vocabulary used in textbooks and lectures in each academic discipline. Teachers receive professional development on sheltered instruction before using it to modify their lessons.

Language Enrichment Course (LEC 1 and LEC 2)  Language Enrichment Course (LEC) is designed to support ELL students in their first 3 years in U.S. schools. LEC 1 is designed for the ELL student in the first year of the Newcomer Program and is scheduled along with Newcomer English class. LEC 2 is designed for 2nd and 3rd year the ELL student receiving English language instruction. The curriculum is designed to enrich and improve the academic and social language of the ELL student. Lessons are aligned to our districts scope and sequence making sure ELPS and TEKS are implemented throughout the lessons. All lessons are creative, engaging, and designed to develop academic language proficiency in the four content areas.
